Abstract done!
And submitted!
This is my first one ever. Woo grad school milestone. The title of my paper is now: “Swami Vivekananda and the Double Horizon: Experiencing the 1893 Parliament of World Religions.” Let’s see if the Stanford grad students want it (pleasepleaseplease). Then I’ll just have to totally overhaul the paper.
Now I need to read between 200 and 300 pages tonight....

Another week
As usual, I disappeared off the radar for a couple of days.
The Saturday night Guster show was epic, as always. They just never disappoint in giving a great show and spreading some happiness and energy. Beforehand, friends and I ate dinner together, and after, we had beers and then late-night tacos, and then I went to SW’s at 2 a.m. He met me at the train, and we spent Sunday together:...

I just wrote my first abstract for a Call for...
I’m submitting a paper I wrote on a phenomenological account of Swami Vivekananda’s speech at the 1893 Parliament of World Religions for a Stanford conference on Religion and the Senses. I doubt it’ll be accepted, but wouldn’t it be fun if it were? And if not, it’s a good opportunity to see how this process works…
The abstract itself needs some revising, but I...

URGENT: Egypt has shut off the internet →
I just received a call from a friend in Cairo (I won’t say who it is now because he’s a prominent activist) telling me neither his DSL nor his USB internet service is working. I’ve just checked with two other friends in different parts of Cairo and their internet is not working either.
This just happened 10 minutes ago — and perhaps not uncoincidentally just after AP TV posted a video of a...

TMI
It’s been a rough evening. Despite a lovely morning waking up in SW’s bed, a productive afternoon of reading, a manicure-pedicure treat, and leftover Indian food for dinner, I still spent a couple of hours crying on the phone to my mother and to becool-sodapop.
It started out with SW asking for a night apart. And my longing to be with him and that being denied made me feel like a...

Waning focus
4 cups of coffee, a bowl of veggie chili, half a veggie sandwich, and a chocolate-chip cookie.
Over 100 pages of William James. None yet of Rene Girard.
Remaining reading: 200 pages of James, 80 of Girard.
Remaining writing: 2 pages on each book.
It’s 4:12 p.m. What can I accomplish in the next couple of hours?…

MIA
Sorry I’ve been a little MIA as of late. Time with SW, finding a new therapist, going to the gym (errr, trying), getting new IL license plates, and doing SO MUCH READING. Three books a week is too much, guys. Too much and not enough.
The anxiety and fear are still here, but they’re creeping silently in some cove, like the eels in The Little Mermaid. I know they’ll resurface -...

I hate knowing I've written a crappy paper.
But really, how much time does one of three short (3-5 page) critical essays deserve?

Indian food makes everything okay
It doesn’t really matter that I haven’t yet written my critical essay for tomorrow. Even though it’s almost 9:30 p.m. already.
I have a great new therapist that I connect with. I have a boyfriend (!) who loves (!) me and who is on his way to my apartment right now. And I have Indian food leftovers for late dinner.
And I veto a mix CD.
Too middle school.

Also, help!
SW’s birthday party is in a couple of weeks, and the theme is “prom.” I need something bordering on hideous/funny, but undeniably sexy and awesome. And also not too expensive (i.e. thrift-shop prices).
Suggestions??

Monday Monday
At a favorite coffeeshop, about to write my 3rd and final critical essay for my American Religious History course, followed by yet more reading.
Still kind of mentally captured by a very brief, 5 a.m. wake-up with SW. He whispered the l-word to me, for the first time, at 5 a.m. I thought he was dreaming, or I was dreaming. I had to have him repeat it, and even then, I asked if he was actually...

This is a fascinating article about the menu changes American fast food chains go through when they open Indian branches. It surprised me so much when I was in Israel how international fast food chains jumped through hoops to cater to Israeli tastes… No cheeseburgers at McDonalds? Pizza Hut offering feta cheese, zaatar and hard boiled eggs as toppings? Burger King selling a full...

Tired but can't sleep
Two weeks of less-than-ideal sleep, i.e. nights of 6 hours or less. I either fall asleep at 3 a.m. or wake up repeatedly in the middle of the night.
And now I’m at SW’s, and he is passed out at 11 p.m., and I cannot fall asleep. We both took melatonin, but clearly it’s not functioning for me. So, my options are the Internet and Rene Girard on the couch, or lying awake while SW...

About time
Tumblr hasn’t been letting me text-post at all today. Maybe it’s tired of my ramblings. (Are you guys?)
After class and a mini-breakdown, I went to the Shedd yesterday to look at the fishes with SW. We only stayed for a little bit because he had a headache, and then we came up to my place, where he napped and I reflected. He dragged me out into the freezing cold to go eat piles of...

EFF my life
My license plates and registration have been suspended by NYS. Even though I have insurance, it’s not for NYS, so NYS is all pissy. And so, I am now, too. DAMN YOU, NYS.
I guess I know what I’m doing bright and early Monday morning… Chicago DMV.
UGH EFF MY LIFE. Nothing I hate more than the DMV.

Bed
I used to love getting into bed. That feeling of relief and comfort and the end of a good, long day. A brief respite from the hustle and bustle.
But now I get into bed, and my mind starts to race, and my stomach flips, and I worry that I won’t be able to sleep, and I worry that I will be consumed by worry.
I want this to stop.
